New Strengthened Security Requirements for Cisco Phone Systems

Beginning February 28 , 2023, the State of Alaska will be upgrading the security measures surrounding its current Cisco phone system.

What this means:

New PIN policies will be implemented for Cisco phones with the following new requirements:

  • PIN will expire after 180 days
  • Length of PIN to be a minimum of 7 number
  • Maximum number of stored 3 PIN on a phone system
  • PIN that are easily guessed, otherwise known as trivial PIN, will not be accepted by the Cisco phone system

When are the requirements going into effect?

  • New Cisco phone users will be required to create passwords with the above criteria, beginning on February, 28th 2023,
  • All existing Cisco users will be required to change their passwords to meet the new requirements by April 15th, 2023.
  • These requirements only apply to employees who use the Cisco phone system. No action is required for employees who utilize Microsoft Teams as their primary phone system.
